Celts, Germans and later Slavic tribes during Great Moravia epoch were living in this area. During roman era it was standing just on the others side of river Danube, which means it was a so called „Barbaricum“ from roman perspective. Anyway, tone castle was built during common Slovak and Hungarian coexistence which we can track back up to 10 century.
We will tell you many stories and context. Also a story of Slovak national hero, that profoundly fought for Slovak nation. And Devín castle is one of the important memory of this fight! 2. Iron curtain monument
Iron curtain was both – a „civilization and political border“ imaginary line and later also a heavily guarded barbed wire border that divided West and East. During the Cold War, the Iron Curtain was a political metaphor used to describe the political and later physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991.
The Iron Curtain also passed through Czechoslovakia at that time, where on the Slovak side a significant part of it was located just below Devín Castle. This line separated the world under the political influence of the Soviet Union, it was guarded by border guards. It was definitely a civilization border, where two different views of the world order was opposing each other. Under Devín Castle there is now a monument that symbolically commemorates this memory of the Iron Curtain, but in the sense of its end. That is why it is called „The Gate of Freedom“.
